What mental health services are available in York?

The new year can often bring new year resolutions, or sometimes the pressure of the festive period can leave us determined to make changes. One of these may be to seek help with our mental health. There are many private therapists out there (and next blog I will explore what to look for when searching) but I thought it may be helpful to mention some of the services that are local to York that operate on a low cost/charitable basis. The first that springs to mind is 1-2-1 Counselling (07587 155678) which is a volunteer run organisation staffed by trained counsellors who offer 7 sessions. It is provided on a pay as you can basis and although shorter term, does mean that often you are seen sooner and can start to explore what it is you are needing. Another service is York Woman’s Counselling (enquiries@yorkwomenscounselling.org) which is run by women for women. Another option is Counselling at Spurriergate Centre (counselling@thespurriergatecentre.com). There is also a clinic at the York St Johns (although on last checking their lists were closed) and there is a York Mind (whose lists are presently shut but this does change). Another option is to go through your GP and the IAPT service which can lead to individual counselling, although often there is alternative provision online or in groups before this.
