Helen Hambleton
I am passionate about the potential we all have within us to create change in ourselves, our relationships and the world around us.
About me and how I work…
I will work with you to construct a gentle, supportive relationship with yourself – a place where you can access the emotional holding and nourishment needed to really heal and grow. We will move at your pace, gradually moving towards a fuller connection with your authentic self.
I truly believe that when we feel safe and understood, we can operate from a place of healing. Your body and mind are not ‘broken’. You don’t need fixing. You are simply using the historical strategies deep wired in your DNA to keep you alive. I am particularly interested in what may be keeping you in a survival state such as maladaptive stress responses, the physical and emotional impact from life stresses, the gut-brain axis and the central role of the Vagus nerve.
My qualifications and experience…
Following a military career and 20 years as a primary school teacher, I wanted to work more collaboratively to affect change. I am a strong advocate for mental health intervention and education for children and young people. I have been working with schools to implement programmes to promote healthy coping strategies and the validation that all emotions are important. The more we feel our feelings, the steadier the waters of daily life become. The happiest people are those who have learnt to prioritise their own self-care and wellbeing.
In addition to my wellbeing work within schools, I also work as a volunteer for the NSPCC delivering their ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ programme to primary schools across North Yorkshire and, as a voluntary counsellor for an established charity, I also provide low cost counselling to the residents of York.
I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). I hold an enhanced DBS and full insurance.
What to expect…
I work with adults experiencing a wide range of issues including trauma, anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties. I offer face-to-face sessions in our welcoming counselling space on Micklegate as well as telephone counselling and email counselling.
I also offer wellbeing services for children (8yrs+). In a compassionate, nurturing environment, I help children and adolescences to develop healthy coping strategies and provide the opportunity to explore ways of addressing anxiety (including academic anxiety). These bespoke therapeutic sessions are structured in collaboration with parents or carers.
I offer both short-term and long-term work. Sessions start from £65 per session and last up to an hour.
How to get in touch…
I offer a free initial consultation to informally discuss your counselling requirements. It is so important for us both to see if we connect and ensure that you feel comfortable. This is a chance to ask questions or to discuss your needs in more detail. There is absolutely no obligation to continue beyond this initial meeting.
To organise your free appointment, please email me at: Helen@yorkcp.org. I look forward to hearing from you.
